La Soledad, Guatemala

La Soledad, owned by the Perez family since 1895, sits atop volcanic soil in Acatenango in the mountain range of Sierra Madre. The unique terroir mixes with warm, moist air from the nearby Pacific Ocean to create a nuanced cup.

La Soledad is 222 acres, half being natural forest which the Perez family maintains. After being affected by leaf rust in 2011, La Soledad decided to plant new varieties. This variety, H1 Centroamericano, is a cross between the disease resistant Sarchimor and Rume Sudan. Originating in Sudan, it's low yielding with unique flavor. The coffee trees are fairly heavily shaded with soil-enriching leguminous trees.

La Soledad, named after Soledad del Carmen, is now run by Henio Perez and his son Raul. They work to continuously improve their product. Raul samples roasts on the farm and cups all the lots in his own cupping room on the premises.

La Soledad planted the H1 to counteract climate change. It is a cross between the disease resistant variety Sarchimor, and the low yielding Rume Sudan. The cup is very much a Central American “coffee-coffee,” but stands out for its nuanced complexity and sweetness with round, soft raspberry and plum, and a glimmer of violets.
