Mamuto, Kenya
Occasionally, coffee trees produce single beans inside a cherry resulting in small round shaped beans called peaberries, hence the lot name “Peaberry”.
Mamuto is a trailblazer in its quality-driven dedication to one uniquely-flavored sweet variety of Arabica, SL-28, for which Kenya became revered by cognoscenti. It is increasingly replaced in Kenya by more robust varieties with more generic flavors.
George Howell Coffee has been buying Mamuto since 2006. We have never faltered, even during exceptionally bad weather years. To experience Mamuto, roasted and brewed properly, is to drink a coffee in every way comparable to the finest red wines. George likens it to the Bordeaux of coffees.
Kenya developed the most stringent processing and milling standards in the world. Beans are sorted in very narrow ranges of size in order to maintain even roasting, with Grade AA comprised of the two largest sizes and AB being the next two sizes. Mamuto is machine sorted and then hand sorted to remove any remaining blemishes.
More than any other farm, Mamuto has put its coffee region, Kirinyaga, on the map. It has raised small farmer awareness to what is possible, and brought seekers of great specialty coffee in growing numbers to its area.
